At Hackett Catholic Prep, service learning is integrated into our curriculum, and every student will have completed a minimum of 80 hours of service before graduation. Many Hackett clubs and organizations, such as Help Haiti, Right to Life, and the National Honor Society provide opportunities for service to others. Last year's graduates completed over 8,600 hours of service during their years at Hackett.
We do this because we recognize that Jesus calls us to serve others. Hackett strives to give students the experience of living out their faith through serving others, at home, at school and in the community and world in which they live. Service also provides experiential learning and exposes our students to real life problems and solutions. At Hackett, the students' service is applied to what they are learning in their classes so that they see that service is not something that we do in a vacuum, but is something that applies to everyday life. Helping our students make service an integral part of their lives helps them to prepare for college, and for life beyond college.
Service formation opportunities
‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ - Mt 25: 40
Love of God propels us on tolove of neighbor. We strive to form students with a servant’s heart who recognizes Christ in their neighbor and who strives to help all those in need. This is done in a variety of different ways.Work-A-Thon: Each year in April the Hackett students and staff head out to serve the greater Kalamazoo area community for a half day and then come back to celebrate with a cookout lunch. Places we have served at include local Catholic parishes, the Gospel Mission, Loaves and Fishes, Catholic Charities, Bronson Hospital, Holy Family Health Care, Sisters of St. Joseph, Portage Community Outreach, Kalamazoo Deacon’s Conference, and Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Alternative Spring Break Trip: Hackett Catholic offers an opportunity for students to use their spring break has an opportunity to go out into the greater community to serve in a different area in the United States. This past year we went to Kentucky to serve through the Christian Appalachia Project (CAP). Students built ramps for elderly patrons who had become homebound because of no safe way to leave their residence. Students also learned about the history of the area and the culture of the people they served. The plan for 2019 Spring Break is to return to Kentucky to again serve through CAP.Monthly Service Opportunities : During the school year, most weeks students will have the opportunity to serve at a non-profit organization in our community. These opportunities include serving dinner at the Gospel Mission, helping out with different projects at Holy Family Health Care, and serving with youth at the Bridge for a Christian joint service project. Summer Service Opportunities: Summer is a great time to serve when many families have a more flexible schedule. There are opportunities to serve at annual summer events, serve at a migrant camp, be a part of a local VBS week, and many others that are not listed. I highly encourage students to take the opportunity to complete their service hours and enter them before the school year begins.
